You put a signature field on the line, sent the document, and the signature came back at the bottom of the last page, or halfway up the margin, or on top of a paragraph. It looks like the tool ignored you. What actually happened is that something decided where the field belonged, and it was not looking at the same thing you were.

Anchors versus coordinates

There are two ways a signing tool decides where a signature goes. It can remember a position on the page, an x and a y, or it can search the document for a marker, a word or a tag like a run of underscores, and place the signature relative to whatever it finds.

Anchors are the convenient one, because they survive a document being re-generated with an extra clause. They are also the one that goes wrong, because if the anchor text is not found, most tools fall back to putting the signature at the end of the document rather than failing loudly. That is precisely the behaviour people report: the signature at the bottom, nowhere near the line.

Why the anchor is not found

The text is an image. A scanned contract has no words in it, only pixels, so there is nothing to search. Every anchor fails and everything lands at the end.

The text is split. A PDF generator can break a word across several text operators, so what reads as "Signature" on screen is stored as three fragments and never matches.

The document changed. The template was updated, the marker was reworded, and the tag that used to be found is not there any more. This is the one that bites in production, because it worked for a year.

The font is a subset with a custom encoding, which is common in exported documents, and the letters extracted are not the letters displayed.

How to place a signature exactly, every time

Look at the document while you place the field, and put it where you can see it. It sounds too obvious to say, and it is the difference between a signature that lands correctly and one that lands wherever a search happened to end up. Placing on the page is coordinates, and coordinates do not depend on text extraction working.

Zoom in before you place it. A field dropped at page-view zoom looks fine and is often twenty pixels off, which shows as a signature sitting under the line rather than on it.

Send it to yourself first if the document is going somewhere that matters. One test run costs two minutes and catches every version of this.

If the document is a scan

Nothing text-based will work, so do not try. Place the signature and the date on the page directly, and add any typed text as new content rather than expecting a field to attach itself to something. This is the normal case for anything that came off a scanner or a phone camera, and it is well handled as long as you are placing rather than searching.

A quicker way to check the result than opening it

Look at the last page. Almost every misplacement of this kind ends up there, because that is the fallback. If the last page has a signature you did not intend, an anchor failed. If the line you meant is empty, the same anchor failed. It is a two-second check that tells you what went wrong, not just that something did.

Questions people ask about this

Can I sign a Word document without the same problem?

Does this happen on a read only PDF as well?

Read-only usually means no editing permission was set, not that the file is locked. The signature is drawn onto the page as new content, so placement works the same way.

Why did my signature land in the wrong place?
