What is Data Residency?
Where customer data is physically stored — a compliance requirement in many jurisdictions.
Data residency is the geographic location where customer data is processed and stored. Many jurisdictions (EU, UK, Canada, Australia, Russia, China, several Middle East and African states) require certain data to stay within their borders or to flow only to adequacy-recognized jurisdictions. PDF Verified offers EU-region hosting (Frankfurt) by default and US (us-east) on request; Enterprise customers can pin to UK (London), Australia, or other regions via dedicated infrastructure.
Why residency matters
Beyond legal compliance, data residency affects latency (closer storage = faster API), redundancy (cross-region failover), and political risk (regulators in your jurisdiction can subpoena local data; foreign data may require MLAT processes).
Default and pinned regions
PDF Verified free + paid plans default to EU (Frankfurt) for primary storage with US (us-east) as a hot DR replica. On Enterprise we offer single-region pinning (EU-only, US-only, UK-only, AU-only) so data never leaves that region.
Audit trail residency
The audit trail and audit certificates inherit the document's storage region — they're never moved to a different region for processing or archival.
