Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to upload a contract to a signing website?

It depends entirely on what happens to it, and most sites will not tell you plainly. The safest version of the question is not to have to trust the answer: a document signed in the browser never leaves the machine, so there is no copy to be breached, subpoenaed or sold. Where you do use a hosted flow here, to collect somebody else's signature, files are encrypted in transit and deleted after an hour.

Can I sign without giving my email address?

Yes. Signing and downloading needs no email. An email is only wanted when you want the document stored in an account, or when somebody else has to be sent a signing link.

Can I sign a document offline?

Yes. Load the page once, then disconnect. The document is opened, laid out, signed and sealed in the browser, so none of that needs a network. Sending it obviously does, but signing it does not.

Is there a signing tool that does not upload my document?

This one. The file is read by the tab and the sealed copy is produced there, so a signing tool that does not upload your document is not a promise here, it is something you can check: disconnect the network and sign anyway.

Can I sign a document without uploading it anywhere?

Yes, and that is the default here rather than a setting. The document is opened and sealed inside the browser tab, so there is no upload to a server, no copy on somebody else machine, and nothing to be breached later. The test is easy to run yourself: disconnect the network and sign a document anyway.

Can I use an eSignature without giving an email address?

Yes. No email is asked for to sign or to download. An email address only becomes necessary when a document has to be stored for you or sent to somebody else to sign.

How can I tell it is really working offline?

Load the page, turn off your wifi, and sign a document. It works. That is a test you can run in ten seconds and it is worth more than any privacy policy.

Is it free to sign a PDF online?

Yes. Files are uploaded over 256-bit TLS, processed in your browser session, and automatically deleted after one hour. Each signature is bound to the document with a SHA-256 tamper-evident seal, so any later edit is detectable.

Are electronic signatures legally binding?

Yes, electronic signatures are legally binding for ordinary business documents in 190+ countries under the US ESIGN Act and UETA, the EU eIDAS Regulation, and equivalent laws worldwide. Courts look for intent, identity and integrity, all of which PDF Verified records.

Do I need to install anything?

What PDF Verified is, and what it is not

Electronic signature law is settled in broad terms and specific in the details. The ESIGN Act, UETA, eIDAS and their equivalents recognise electronic signatures across more than 190 countries, and what decides a particular case is intent to sign plus evidence connecting the signature to the signer, which is what the audit certificate records. Certain document types carry their own formalities wherever you are: deeds, wills, some property instruments, and anything requiring a witness or a notary. Sign only what you are authorised to sign, since applying another person signature without their authority is forgery whatever tool is used.
