Frequently asked questions

My PDF says "read-only" or will not let me edit. Can it still be signed?

Usually yes. Read-only in most PDFs means no editing permission was set for the content, not that the file is encrypted. The signature is drawn onto the page as new content rather than by editing what is there. If the file is genuinely password protected against opening, you need the password first.

How do I sign a PDF that is not fillable?

The same way you sign one that is: drag the signature onto the page. A fillable PDF is a document somebody prepared with form fields in it, and most PDFs are not that. Nothing here needs fields to exist, which is why a flat contract, a scanned form and a prepared one all behave the same.

The PDF has a signature line but nothing happens when I click it.

That is a printed line, not a field. It is drawn on the page like any other line. Drop your signature on top of it, which is exactly what a pen does to a printed line on paper.

Can I flatten the PDF so my signature cannot be moved?

That is what sealing does. The signature stops being a movable object and becomes part of the page, and the whole file is hashed so any later change to it fails verification.
