The first is putting an image in the header, which only appears in Print Layout and Print Preview and is invisible in the normal view people actually work in. The second is WordArt floated over the grid, which moves when rows are inserted and can be dragged away by anyone. Neither survives being sent to somebody else. How to add a watermark to an Excel spreadsheet, step by step

  1. Drop the .xlsx in, Each sheet is paginated using the workbook own page setup: paper size, orientation, margins, column widths, number formats and repeating print titles. That is the layout the watermark has to sit on, so it is the one used.
  2. Type the mark, CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, INTERNAL ONLY, or the client name. Set the angle and how faint it is, and look at it against a dense sheet: a watermark that reads well on a mostly-empty page can bury a column of figures.
  3. Apply it across the sheet, Every printed page of the sheet, or only the pages that matter. A long schedule usually wants all of them, because pages get separated.

How do I add a confidential watermark in Excel?

Can I keep the working spreadsheet unmarked?
