Getting the words out without the layout
Sometimes you want the content and not the document: quoting a clause, feeding a contract into a search, pulling figures into a spreadsheet, or translating something. Extraction gives you the text as text, and deliberately does not try to recreate the layout, which is the thing that makes converted documents so untidy.
On a text PDF this is exact, because the words are already in the file. On a scan it produces nothing until OCR has run, because there is nothing there to extract.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Extract Text from PDF tool free?
Yes. Extract Text from PDF is 100% free with no signup. Your file is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded to a server.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in any modern browser on desktop or mobile, no app, no plugin, no account.
Is my file private?
Yes. Files are processed locally in your browser, so they never leave your device.
Why did I get no text at all?
The PDF is almost certainly a scan, so it holds an image of a page rather than words. Run OCR first, then extract.
Why is the text out of order?
Because a PDF stores drawing instructions rather than reading order, and a multi-column layout can extract column by column or line by line depending on how it was produced. Complex layouts need a read-through.
Are tables preserved?
Not as tables. Extraction gives you the text; use the PDF to Excel tool when the grid is the point.
