Getting a table out of a PDF is guesswork, done carefully
A table in a PDF is usually not a table. It is text drawn at coordinates, sometimes with lines drawn near it, and the rows and columns exist only in the eye of the reader. Extraction works by inferring the grid from where the text sits and where the rules are, which is why a bank statement with clean ruled columns extracts beautifully and a report with alignment achieved by spaces does not.
What to expect: a well-ruled financial table comes out close to correct. A table split across pages needs the header rows removing from the middle. Numbers formatted with currency symbols and thousands separators come across as text unless you convert the column afterwards, which is the first thing to check before you start summing them.
The check worth doing every time
Total one column in the spreadsheet and compare it to the total printed in the PDF. If they match, the extraction is sound. If they do not, you have found a row that was misread or a number that came across as text, and you have found it in ten seconds rather than after somebody has acted on the figure.
That check matters more than anything else on this page. A converted table that is subtly wrong is more dangerous than one that is obviously wrong.
